The basic tool of astrological therapy is the horoscope chart, which is a selective map of the heavens at the time and place of an event (most commonly the birth of a human being). The chart consists of five concentric circles, each of which symbolizes a different layer of the psyche:
- The 12 houses comprise the outermost circle and reflect the areas of life in which we create experiences: relationships, work, money, spirituality and so forth.
- The 12 zodiac signs make up the second circle and symbolize the inherent energies that color the way we act, for example: impulsively, cautiously or protectively. These archetypal energies are rich with possibilities depending on the choices you make.
- Eleven heavenly bodies (seven planets, Sun, Moon, Pluto and North Node) are placed around the third circle. They mark the psychic tools at our disposal — wisdom, feeling, will, etc. — for directing our energies toward activity.
- Aspect lines fill the fourth circle in, connecting pairs of heavenly bodies that are around 0, 30, 60, 90, 120, 150 and 180 degrees apart. Different planetary pairs typically are activated with different types of energies depending on the number of degrees separating the pair.
- The innermost circle is the Self: the Divine Will carried by each person, which reflects the Universal Divine that some people call God. Access to this center center stillpoint becomes more steady and dependable as consciousness is increased and parts of the personality are integrated and clear.
These five layers of existence, as described in the astrology pioneered by Bruno and Louise Huber, can be analyzed as a visual metaphor for the individual psyche. The chart as a whole, arranged differently for each person, shows in its unique arrangement the subconscious motivations and various parts of the individual personality, as well as the opportunities and obstacles that will likely arise and the rhythms in which various energies will come forth and fade out.
Astrologically-oriented therapy is not about predicting the future, telling you the right path or robbing you of free will. It is, instead, about using the powerful wisdom available in the horoscope chart to identify the unconscious dynamics and underlying patterns that may be blocking you from blossoming — and the ones that could help you grow into your fullest vision of yourself.
