Part I
In Part I, you will explore your thoughts, feelings and experiences in six basic areas of your life. The questions can be adapted for anything you experience, but they are presented here from the perspective
of an aspiring entrepreneur. Is your whole life — not just your bank account, not just your great idea — ready for a shift from employee to employer?

As you go through the questions, please remember two things:

  • There are no right or wrong answers. The questions are a springboard for understanding where you’re strong, and where you might need some work, before you jump into a life of entrepreneurship.
  • Take your time. Some of the questions will be hard to take in, and some of your answers will be tough to admit. Take your time and take care of yourself so you don’t overload your psyche.

If at any time, you feel yourself getting overwhelmed or distressed by this self-assessment, stop and find someone to talk to — a trusted friend or family member, a therapist, a spiritual advisor or someone else.

1/7 Axis: Promises
We make promises to people by the very way we present ourselves: A professional appearance promises professional treatment. Jeans and a t-shirt say, “Let’s just relax.” It’s jarring and confusing when your conduct and your image are mismatched. What’s more, your look is the first clue others have about how they should treat you. What are you telling them?

By the same token, we often unconsciously draw to us the responses we expect to get from our environment. Who and what do you assume you’ll meet in the world each day? People who bring love? Humor? Anger? Derision? People who believe in your work — or those who don’t?

1st House: Promises I Make
To get clarity on the promises and contracts you unconsciously make with others, create a four-column table, with each of the following questions at the top of each table. Answer each question for yourself in turn.

1) What image do I project? Consider your physical image including body, hair, clothes and accessories as well as the way you speak, interact and respond to people. Your physical environment, such as office, storefront or studio also fall under this question. Simply describe your image here; try not to assign subjective terms like “beautiful,” “messy” or “stylish.”

2) What feeling or value do I assign to each trait or characteristic described in question 1? Am I proud of the stacks of books lining my office? Or embarrassed by the mess? Does it feel natural to dress in a business suit each day, or do I feel like I’m wearing a costume when I do?

3) Do these traits, feelings and values align with who I am inside and the image I want to project? Consider how the sum total of your image — physical, energetic, relational — translates into a statement about yourself. Is the public statement you’re making a reflection of who you really are? Is it also the statement you want to be making to the world?

4) Is there difference between what I project now and what I’d like to project? If so, what is the reason for the divergence? How would you look/act/appear differently if you had your choice? Why? What would that say about yourself to the world?

7th House: You Promise Me
To understand what you expect from other people — the way you assume they will act toward you — create a four-column table, with each of the following questions at the top of each table. Answer each question for yourself in turn.

Note: This is not a lineup of contracts or agreements you have consciously made. What’s important here is to understand what you expect other people to deliver in their relationship with you.

1) What do I expect to experience when I encounter another person? How do I expect others to appear, speak to me and otherwise interact with me? Do I expect people will be courteous? Rude? Timid? Critical? Think about various situations in which you encounter people. With what kinds of assumptions or expectations do you enter each situation?

2) Is that what usually happens? In which situations do my expectations come true? In which do they not?

3) How do my expectations align with and/or diverge from reality? Am I more often surprised or not at how people act toward me? What does that say about my expectations? About the difference between what is real and what I expect to be real?

4) What do I feel, say and do when my expectations are met? When they aren’t? Do I change my thoughts, feelings and/or external behavior depending on whether the encounter goes as I expect?

Take Me to Part 2!
In Part 2, you’ll explore your own and other people’s assets, possessions and sense of value, worth and control over life. What tangible and non-tangible things do you own that could help or hinder your business? What do you envy in other people, and how does that affect your business? Take me there now.
