Aries is the first horse out of the gate: the restless pioneer who is unafraid — even anxious — to go where no one else has gone before. There is impulse, instinct and pressing-ahead at the core of this sign, an urge for adventure and a need to forge paths through untouched underbrush.
The ambition here is to simply burst forth, to move into the terrain with assurance and drive, to feel the freedom of having no limits, no confines, no rules to restrict one’s actions, choices or swiftness. It is the first pure impulse of leadership, and Aries people make strong leaders if they can slow down a pace for their followers, who may not be as quick on the uptake. But beware the Aries whose path is blocked or whose will is thwarted: Forward motion is as necessary to this person as inhaling air is to the rest of us, and they will use power and control if they face obstacles.
Truly, Aries is one of the most competitive signs of the zodiac. At its best the competition, as everything with Aries, is about the self. Contests against another person, or against time, weather, circumstance or any other external force, provide spirited impetus for driving ahead. But the outcome of the race is really, mostly, a measure of Aries’ selfhood: Being first in one’s own mind is, in the end, a more important measure than being first of two separate beings.
Aries energy is akin to the birth of a baby: the pressing through the long, dark, tight canal, instinctively knowing where to go and how to get there. Aries is also the newborn’s first howl, the wildish cry: “I am here!” Attention must be granted, because ignoring and neglect are simply not options when full-throttle Aries energy is present.
And yet, like the newborn child and the wild horse just out of the gate, Aries may have trouble giving attention back. It shines bright and hard but puts so much energy into doing so that reflecting the light of another just isn’t in its scopes. It needs a little prodding. Okay, sometimes a lot. And that energy – whether directed toward sports, work, sex, mental gymnastics or anything else — can be exhausting for friends, partners and co-workers who might like to stop and pick the daisies and have lunch before moving on.
Also off-putting can be the blunt honesty that Aries perceives as necessary to move ahead: The straight path through doesn’t only apply to backpacking and speed boating; it also applies to relationships: Let’s cut the small talk and get to where we’re going. Is this happening or isn’t it? What’s your problem? Buck up! For people who like to dally their way into partnership, or noodle around with different options for a while, this Aries frankness and foot-stamping can be a surprise. What do we do with the child who can’t wait?
A child or a racehorse or a fire with lots of fuel can keep going and going and going without stopping to survey the road left in its wake. Tracking back sometimes may seem anathema to Aries but is a necessary pause to ensure its instinct does not stray too far off course. Instinct feels all physical and in-the-now as it occurs, but Aries has a sharp mind that can be exercised and toned, as well, into increasingly more refined instinct. The trick, Aries, is to look back even as you look forward: What have I wrought? What path has been cut? Is it the right one? Does it need going over again? A new direction? A deeper cut? Where is it headed? It is right for me?
